What is counselling about?

It is an opportunity for you to talk through anything that might be concerning you. Things which have been worrying you for some time or something which has started to worry you recently. You will have a chance to explore your feelings so that you can be helped to find resources in yourself to cope with your difficulties and problems.

Who will be my counsellor?

This depends on time and availability. All counsellors are trained, have regular supervision and work according to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Code of Ethics.

What happens when I get my first appointment?

You will be invited to attend an initial appointment to talk about your needs. This appointment will last for 50 minutes and you will be invited into a private, quiet room and will be listened to by your counsellor. Your counsellor is here to help you, not to advise or tell you what to do. Knowing where to begin can feel awkward and you may find it difficult to talk to your counsellor, or you may say a great deal at your first meeting. This is often what happens in the unfamiliar surroundings of a first session but your counsellor will be aware of this and will allow you to work at your own pace. If you and your counsellor decide that counselling will be of help to you, you will be invited to come back and see your counsellor on a weekly basis.

Does anyone else know what we talk about?

What you say is confidential between you and your counsellor. Your counsellor has a supervisor that they work with to ensure that you have the best service. Your counsellor will discuss aspects of their work with their supervisor, this helps the counsellor to find the most helpful ways of working with you.

What happens if my counsellor has to cancel an appointment?

If you have left contact details, and given us permission, we will use these to contact you. If your counsellor cannot contact you, you will be given the date of your next appointment on arrival.

What happens if I miss an appointment?

If you cannot attend an appointment we ask that you contact us as soon as possible and a message will be passed to your counsellor.

Does it cost me anything?

The service is free to all young people aged 25 and under living in the district of Winchester. If you live outside the district of Winchester we are still happy to see you but the cost of each session is £30.
